Citation Management (EndNote and More)

Time saving software for managing your references research and writing; particularly EndNote.

How it works:

Zotero is a commonly-used alternative to EndNote that works most easily as an extension within the Firefox browser for PC and Mac. It is compatible with MS Office and Open Office. A free Zotero account gives you 300 mg of storage. It is also available as a desktop program, called Zotero Standalone. UMKC is now supporting the use of Zotero, as are many academic institutions.

NOTE: See below regarding access to Zotero at CMH.

Generally, Zotero has fewer features and is less user-friendly than the EndNote Desktop program, but it is very functional and is popular because of the rapid, free access that works through the Firefox browser.

Additionally, Connectors which allow you to save items to Zotero Standalone are available for Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox. A 'bookmarklet' for Zotero can be added to almost any web browser (desktop and mobile) to allow references to be sent to your Zotero library. The method of adding the bookmarklet to your browser will vary depending on the software you wish to use. Please see the Bookmarklet reference section on the Zotero website.

Warning - CMH Security Block

PLEASE NOTE: CMH HAS RECENTLY BLOCKED ACCESS TO ZOTERO.

As UMKC is promoting the use of Zotero, and Zotero is very commonly-used by other academic and medical institutions, you may already have a Zotero account. If you wish to use it at CMH, you will need to obtain an individual 'exception' through Information Systems Security.

To be granted such an exception, go to the ServiceNow Self Service portal at https://cmhprod.service-now.com/sp and click the “I need something link”. From there, select the Firewall Request tile, complete the required fields of the form while being sure to select “I need access to an Online Storage and Backup Site (Example: Google Docs/Drive)” from the Request Item drop down list. Once the ticket is created, you may need to complete some required training and gain approval from Compliance, if you have not already.
