Anatomy of a Citation

Journal Article

Every citation will include the above highlighted information; however, depending on the citation format the location of the info may be different. For example, below are two different formats for the AMA citation above. Most citation formats limit the number of authors named in the citation, but the number included varies. The author list may include et al or an ellipsis in the middle of the list followed by the final author. The only format that always includes all authors (even if there are over 100) is NLM.

NLM:

When viewing a publication on PubMed, the PMID will be listed below the author list and the DOI will be included in the citation information above the title. Please note the epub date is NOT the publication date. This is the date the journal released it before being published. The official publication date included in the citation will be the first date listed after the journal title on PubMed, will include citation information (vol/issue/page numbers), and not state "Online ahead of print" at the end.
